چکیده

The name ‘‘asthma nervosa’’ [1] is linguistically incorrect. Asthma is a Greek neutral noun in a language that tries hard to keep its genders apart. Nervosa is a Latin adjective and this language also does not mix the genders: nervosa is feminine (as are anorexia and bulimia, two conditions for which nervosa is appropriate). Therefore, we should refer to asthma as nervosum (both neutral). This may sound slightly odd in English, and therefore, I would have no objection to ‘‘nervous asthma’’. However, if we want to pay tribute to the Classics, we should try to use them as correctly as possible. A. Papagiannis Pulmonary Dept, St Luke’s Hospital, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Maintaining Respiratory Health in Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system, however, it also affects a number of other organs and systems. More than 90% of mortality of  CF patients is due to lung complications.  Healthy lungs are important for a long life for people with CF, We will discuss two important topics for maintaining respiratory health. Chronic use of drug...

The Role of Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection in Asthma

© Copyright The Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology • The Korean Academy of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease http://e-aair.org Respiratory infections can cause wheezing episodes in children and can influence the onset and severity of asthma via complex and intersecting mechanisms. Infections can trigger atopic asthma, and atopy can cause wheezing during airway inf...

باکتری های پاتوژن جدا شده از نمونه بیماران مشکوک به عفونت ریوی

The lower respiratory tract is vulnerable to infection by a wide variety of microorganisms, because it is one of the organ systems which communicate directly with the environments. Although viruses and fungi can cause lower respiratory tract infections, bacteria are the dominant pathogens. Among bacteria the common causes of lower respiratory tract infection is Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycopla...

Respiratory tract infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae in interleukin-12 knockout mice results in improved bacterial clearance and reduced pulmonary inflammation.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a leading cause of pneumonia and is associated with asthma. Evidence links M. pneumoniae respiratory disease severity with interleukin-12 (IL-12) concentration in respiratory secretions. We evaluated the microbiologic, inflammatory, and pulmonary function indices of M. pneumoniae pneumonia in IL-12 (p35) knockout (KO) mice and wild-type (WT) mice to determine the role o...

Elevated cytokine and chemokine levels and prolonged pulmonary airflow resistance in a murine Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia model: a microbiologic, histologic, immunologic, and respiratory plethysmographic profile.

Because Mycoplasma pneumoniae is hypothesized to play an important role in reactive airway disease/asthma, a comprehensive murine model of M. pneumoniae lower respiratory infection was established. BALB/c mice were intranasally inoculated once with M. pneumoniae and sacrificed at 0 to 42 days postinoculation. All mice became infected and developed histologic evidence of acute pulmonary inflamma...
